The Holiday Cyclist

I have mentioned before I enjoy cycling, so much so that I have a number of these cycling ornaments on my Christmas tree. However, when the weather gets as cold as it has been today, I rarely can build up the courage to pull out the bike and go for a ride. So, instead of riding I got the idea to setup the tripod and take some shots of my little cycling buddies.

I don’t have a “true” macro lens. Instead I purchased a set of close-up filters that I use on my Pentax 18-55 mm zoom lens; I find it works well most of the time.

Winter in the Great Swamp

The Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is located in Morris County, New Jersey, about 26 miles west of Manhattan’s Times Square. It consists of 7,735 acres and has become a resting and feeding area for more than 244 species of birds. Fox, deer, muskrat, turtles, fish, frogs and a wide variety of wildflowers and plants also call the refuge "home". The US Fish & Wildlife Service maintains a series of boardwalk like trails that allow visitors to walk through the swamp without disrupting the wildlife and remain dry.

A December Evening Falls on Indian Lake

Returning home from an afternoon of playing around with my camera I noticed how cool the light looked on the lake as I about to turn up my street. I quickly pulled over and grabbed my camera and tripod, jumped out of my car and this is what I got.

I took this earlier this evening. I’m having fun trying out my new lens and its funny how some December snow can help with the holiday feeling.

December Moon Rises

This is the first shot I’ve taken with my new Sigma 10-20mm lens. The postman delivered it today and as soon as I could I ran out to give it a go.

Something you may or may not know about me is that I am an avid cyclist and I’ve passed this farm hundreds of times while out riding and thought it would be a cool place to give the new lens a try.

The moon rises on the first evening of December as twilight fades.

Neuschwanstein Castle

This goes back a few years to a trip I took with my wife & son to Bavaria and Austria. This is definitely a part of the world I must visit again.

Neuschwanstein Castle is a 19th-century Bavarian palace on a hill near Hohenschwangau and Füssen in southwest Bavaria, Germany. The palace was commissioned by Ludwig II (AKA, Mad King Ludwig) as a retreat and as homage to Richard Wagner, the King’s inspiring muse. Ludwig died mysteriously before the castle was completed.
